Letting Go Of Getting Stuck In Life By Being Present With Our Stuckness Through The Power Of A Sweet Surrender

-Rhonda Byrne

Looking back in the rearview mirror, I remember working with a spiritual counselor for many years, who reminded me that people get stuck in life, and can have a really hard time getting unstuck. His empathy statement still sounds true because, the truth is, we all get stuck.

Upon reflection, my old spiritual counselor’s wise guidance invited a personal awakening of an awareness that a big part of my own getting stuck at that time was that I was getting stuck on other people’s stuckness . . . and taking it personally. It can be hard to not to become moved by other people’s stuff. Although experience teaches that it is freeing to stay centered, and observe those entanglements soften and relax. Ah, letting go of victim consciousness is a process, like peeling away the layers of an onion.

Awakening to our true nature as spiritual beings having human experiences happens when we are surrendering to the will of the Universe by getting in alignment with it. Ancient meditative movement practices like Tai Chi supports this process by integrating the right and left hemispheres of our brains, and facilitating emotional regulation of our neurological systems by re-patterning them.

In addition to Bruce Lee’s beautiful introduction, the video below also features Professor Cheng Man Ching, who brought Tai Chi to the West, and some of his students who reflect back on their experiences with him. Both of these men had very strong rebellious streaks because they brought secrets of their people to the West. Sharing their knowledge with outsiders was strictly forbidden, and against the orders of their masters.

But they both knew that the West needed to be clued in to the mysteries of the martial arts. Although Professor’s students deeply respected him as a master, some have also said that he wasn’t an enlightened being, and that he had an ego. His playful soul and competitive spirit is probably what made him so approachable to his students. Not long before he died, he said that he was approximately 70% Confucius and 30% Lao Tzu. He also emphasized that he was interested in learning how to be human, and that it takes a long time to do that:

Reflecting back on my own experiences with getting stuck, and what to do about it reminds me of my last semester of college, many moons ago. At that time, I took an extra class as an independent study with one of my psychology professors so that I could graduate on time. Part of my stuckness back then was procrastination. It’s not that Grandmother’s Stop Procrastination tapes with subliminal message hidden underneath ocean waves didn’t work. It’s just that building ‘Righteous Chi’ works gradually, like the power of water. Once enough momentum is present, there is no stopping it.

Back to my last semester in college . . . I took a heavy course load to fulfill my academic requirements for graduation. My psychology professor was also a part time psychotherapist, who worked with a colleague who was also a therapist with his own full time practice. These two progressive men were both concerned about when their clients would get stuck during their therapeutic process, particularly between sessions. Part of their stuckness as psychotherapists was when their clients would get stuck. As therapists, they felt a degree of responsibility and helplessness about that.

Given that, both clinical psychologists were very interested in exploring a newly emerging therapeutic idea at the time called bibliotherapy. Basically, bibliotherapy is a medium to utilize reading, and other multimedia forms (movies, videos, podcasts, quotes, articles, etc.) to reinforce the power of the therapeutic process for change to occur. The independent study explored a deep dive into how bibliotherapy might be utilized as a medium to help clients get unstuck; especially during the interval between sessions or when they were outside of a therapy session. The three of us met weekly to discuss and unpack bibliotherapeutic experiences. I read a bunch of literature on the emerging subject, and wrote a paper based on my research, our clinically oriented weekly conversations, and reflections about what I learned from the experience.

Many years later, I collaborated with librarians, who were aware of the growing body of research on bibliotherapy’s efficacy. Plenty of counselors out there will assign “homework assignments” to their clients. In many cases this involves utilizing bibliotherapy as a medium to water the seeds of change so that they can take root.

Flash forward to today, experiences with getting stuck in therapy appears to be akin to how meditators talk about applying what we learn during sitting meditation to when we’re off the cushion, and going about the business of living our lives. A big part of why we get stuck has to do with our habituated mind, and cravings that block us from experiencing the present moment. Truly, this is a relatable experience to anyone who is taking an honest look at themselves, or in many cases feeling triggered by looking at others.

Finally, check out the video below by highly respected veteran spiritual teacher and nun, Pema Chodron, that further amplifies the sentiment. She has been a leading catalyst in bringing Buddhist principles to the West:

May all beings be free and awaken to inner peace,

Coping with Climate Change, and The Transition Into A New Age and Paradigm.

If you are paying purposeful attention to the plight of humanity today, perhaps you might notice a popular pandemic beneath the viral headlines. From a spiritual perspective, human suffering is largely due to people stopping at their judgements, hiding behind them, and frequently perceiving themselves as either inferior or superior to someone or something else. We all have our talents and struggles. But on a soul level, none of us are any better or worse than anyone else. We all have our issues, and are working out our own dharma. Problems arise when we get identified with our judgments, make our positions the absolute right positions, and then justify our positions by reinforcing them with sophisticated arguements in our minds that build cases against any other viewpoints that appear alternative to our own.

We see this play out when children fight over a toy when playing together until they are confronted by an adult’s intervention. And then typically the child that took the toy from the other child justifies why they took the toy in the first place, therefore making it right, and bypassing any guilt or shame that should be examined on the inside. That’s mostly why humans lie and deceive at times. As adults, most of us have become quite sophisticated at this skillful avoidance tactic, often acting out these nuances in our fantasies, and also sometimes concretely in our relationships. But in reality, this is just the anxious little voice of the ego that is also known in Taoism as the Chattering Monkey Mind. It can become a storied arrogant bravado, as its hubris makes convincing arguments that perceive itself as always right, by acting as judge and jury, case closed. It’s hard to argue with that or peer behind the curtain, beyond the masterful illusion. Besides, there’s no illusion if you don’t see it for what it is.

I remember when I was in High School, I had become quite adept at constructing my own concrete reality in my mind that felt safe to me. Whenever I felt threatened by someone else’s position, I would end an argument by saying something like, “you know I’m right”, and walk away from the interaction feeling like I won. Boy, was this ingratiating to my ego. As if communication in relationships should be competitions, where there is a winner and a loser, and one side walks away with a trophy. Pretty silly, and embarrassing, but many people still buy into this form of propaganda, and align with the dangerous ‘cult of personality’ that spreads vis a vis a pandemic of mis/disinformation, like the wildfires out West. It doesn’t matter if you live in a dictatorship, capitalist, socialist society or the Land of Honah Lee. Here in the US, we have capitalism and socialism, where the private sector’s goal is to make money, and medicare that’s designed to take care of people’s health needs. The stupidity of the arguement is a failure to value that both of these subsystems want to expand. Moreover, the fighting about justifying that one side should be held back, while the other should move forward trumps equitable solutions. The truth is that there are enough resources for both, and we can all win. We know from the Law of Attraction that abundance abounds. It isn’t that the lower self isn’t real. It’s just that the Higher Self is more real. The illusion of polarity is healed and dissolved from this perspective. You can’t see that when your blinders are on, and so rigidly clinging to the righteousness of your attached position.

Take a look at the significance of the myriad of thought forms that are circulating in our individual and collective habituated minds. We are creating our beliefs from within, and they are reflecting back to us from our outer world. Many human relationships, including close friendships, are frequently based on unconscious agreements that are motivated by guilt, and an underlying fear that if certain expectations aren’t met, then the relationship could fade into the backdrop, or is maybe even doomed to end. Think about the ‘fear of missing out’ (FOMO) phenomenon that has become a very real experience, and part of many people’s suffering. Rather than speaking our truths authentically, people will give up their power to protect someone else, in an effort to keep the relationship on life support. The internal commercials we buy into go something like this: Well, if I don’t give such and such to my friends, then maybe they will be mad at me, hold a grudge against me, and unfriend me on social media or not invite me to the next party. If I don’t give so and so a Christmas card, then maybe I’ll be off their list. If I don’t suck it up and go to a social gathering, then maybe I’ll be deleted from my friend’s contacts, or a circle of friends group. And maybe you aren’t overtly excommunicated by your congregation, but maybe a lot of pretending that nothing is going on, or people don’t say anything at all, talk behind your back, give you that fake reptillian smile or a furrowed brow next time they see you.

Nobody likes being left out or excluded. But what about when you are leaving yourself hanging out to dry by avoiding personal growth, and nurturing your soul’s evolution? Authentic relationships, and friendships understand that there are times to hit the pause button, and allow people to be where they are at, and who they are. The Higher Self doesn’t live in the realm of tit for tat, or I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine. It’s not about the ritual of gift giving, or proving your love to someone or something. Sometimes, embodying the Universal pillars of Love and Truth is a selfless act of giving another person space, coupled with a self-care act of just being with yourself. The old world paradigm might make for an entertaining Game of Thrones, but it isn’t sustainable or rewarding on a deeper, intrinsicly soul level. Reciprocity is a different way of making connections, and engaging with our human family. There is a way to connect with your own soul, and another soul without any strings attached, or any sense of expectation. We can do this in judgment free zones, and by listening on a level that goes deeper than words, and even beyond attached emotions. Some call this form of empathic listening ‘tuning in’. It is possible to give freely without resentment. It might mean that you give yourself space back to yourself, picture your own inner nobility or the inner nobility of another that could be the target of your disgruntlement, and meditate on that. And if you feel that you are giving in a way that is leaving your feeling resentful, inserting yourself into someone else’s affairs, needing someone else to insert themselves into yours, or finding yourself being seduced to do so or get sucked into someone else’s drama, then maybe you are being invited to examine something deeper going on inside of yourself.

On a larger scale, keep in mind that the global chaos on the planet right now is really challenging the order among our human family, and in society at large. This is part of the transition process from leaving an old paradigm behind, and moving into a new one. I know it is challenging not to get sucked into the chaos, conspiracy theories, or ‘cult of personality’ that we already spoke of. But try to remember that we are spiritual beings having human experiences. On a deeper and higher level, our souls want to be freed from this bondage. The entanglement with our attachment to form is part of our alchemal process that we are meant to relax and let go of. It doesn’t mean you are above the pandemonium or that you don’t feel the pain and suffering of humanity deeply in your bones. It just means you don’t allow yourself to get sucked into the hellish drama of it all. Do whatever you can to connect/ground yourself to this earth, find gratitude in your heart, discover inner peace in your being, and remember to just breathe. You got this. We got this.

Climbing Down the Mountain, into the Lion’s Den of our Souls

The Winter Solstice arrives on December 21st,
signaling the darkest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere

A Full Cold Moon follows in its wake on the day after that.

Spirits can run high and naturally crouch low this time of year . . .

Might as well allow these tension of opposites
flow in your being without getting too swayed in either direction.

Another astrological eclipse season is coming shortly after
the birth of the Gregorian New Year in early January.

The Chinese New Year of the Pig rolls in on February 5, 2019

More winds of change are in the air

Do you see the parallels between President Hoover
and the stock market crash of 1929 and today’s plummeting capital?

Consider these changing tides a newer redistribution
of wealth and financial appreciation for the many!

What about the parallels between President Nixon,
Watergate and President Trump and “Russiangate?”

Underneath these time traveling synchronicities is
a growing remember when tune to “power to the people”

The darkness of feminine energies is rising,
as is further movement into a new Aquarian Age Consciousness.

As always, picture peaceful, calming thoughts,
and be gentle on yourself.

At the same time, do what you can to make the world a better place.
But remember to do so with love in your heart.

If you find yourself being seduced by hate,
be mindful to exhale this dead energy,
and let it go to so that it can transform into the light of the Universe.

In this dark time of year, think about the resurrection of the light

He rises everyday day till Spring arrives on the Vernal Equinox in March,
and then the sunlight grows stronger every day after that
until He peaks on the Summer Solstice in June

A New Moon, Election, and Vision to see Transformation Ahead

I remember hearing an amazing story recently,
about a hawk swooping out of the sky,
and then unexpectedly offering a freshly killed snake,
as a surprise gift along the path of a startled traveler . . .

Given that Hawk symbolizes the power of observation,
we are invited to see what messages are being sent to us from Spirit . . .

What does Snake have to say to you about the power
of fire that burns within our soul?

Election Day swoops in tomorrow,
along with a New Moon on Wednesday . . .

The winds of change are swirling around in the air!

Hawk has connections with New Moons,
and Mercury . . .

And at the tail end of next week, we will be revisited by
Mercury in Retrograde again.

Many people experience spacing out more at that time, or feel like
they are walking in a Twilight Zone kind of reality.

But Mercury in Retrograde is also a good time to look at things
in a different light, venture deeper into the dark,
and give rise to a new moon shine through a wider angle lens.

Of course New Moons are always associated
with new beginnings . . .

Our ancestors believed that the wall between the
spirit and material realms relaxed at this time of year,
making it easier for our different worlds to intersect.

If you magnify that with the energies streaming in right now,
it might be tempting to get sucked into your fears,
and find yourself coming from places of hate . . .

But try to trust in the Universe, and its vibration of
Love and Truth to light our way together, as we
move further into a new connections.

It is a good time to meditate on letting go of old ways, old boxes,
shedding the conditioning of our old skins,
so that we can awaken to new,
more porous ways of being at this time.

Snake reflects metamorphosis . . .
Yesterdays shadows want to transform into the light of healing

Perhaps you venture down into a snake hole in your consciousness,
and see how you can come up with new eyes to look at
your past fears in a fresh way . . .

Emotions are waxing now, and will be further amplified
by a Full Beaver Moon on November 23rd.

Beavers are epic builders, and like to get their work done
before swamps freeze for the Winter . . .

I think about how many of our Founding Fathers were Freemasons,
and that their animal totems empowered them to create in a new industry,
while building a New World back then.

Perhaps this could be an invitation into the realm of Temperance
regarding anger about their ignorance of their injustices at that time,
in spite of the Divine expression that manifested as the Constitution.

But consider that people didn’t even know that
dinosaurs existed on this planet
at the time when this sacred document was written.

What is looked upon as conventional science today,
can easily become yesterday’s dinosaur!

The will of the people are speaking up.
We might as well hear the messages that are being spoken!

Today, we are waking up again to new perspectives,
frontiers, and ways of being together.

Till we tweet again peeps,

Revisiting Our Cardinal Virtues

Do you hear Cardinal whistling a prequel
to the intensities of Summery breezes blowing in the wind?

When I think about suicide, and reflections of some of Anthony’s Bourdain’s
comments about his own arrested development, tasting desperate, privilege,
and the tension of opposites he felt about his
personal wrestling with the interplay between order and chaos . . .

I can understand how he would have had enough of
the pain and suffering in this world, and felt like it was time to check out

Truth is, it can be hard to suck it up, get up,
and keep moving forward in the natural school of Hard Knox . . .

The trick is to learn how to make friends with your inner angels and demons,
and integrate your past selves with the new beginnings of your rebirth . . .

Can you hear Cardinal’s virtuous voice singing
songs about the winds of change blowing in?

Her chorus echoes a callback about empowering us to transition
into the vibration of an innate feminine power!

Perhaps you see yourself as a generalized, intense masculine charged,
get things done, taskmaster doer!

That’s OK, so long as you don’t get identified with that role
Otherwise, you can bet your bottom dollar on a slippery slope ahead . . .

Connect with your heart, let her light your way with your head held high,
with a wide angled gaze in your field of vision . . .

It can be challenging to tune into Nature’s mixed messages that blow in
different directions around our Planet

On one perch, Cardinal reminds us to nurture our own life force –
But too much fire from the sun’s rays can burn you at the stake

Might as well remember to wax on our creative energies
and wash our feminine selves with the watery tides of our intuitive faculties

Time to come out of hiding behind the shadows,
and let your inner light shine like the sun

Meditation on Cardinal’s energy awakens
exploration of traditional, old school values . . .

These re-discoveries are divergent planetary systems of thought
from unconventional beliefs that are worth remembering

Masculine yang gains ground,
while Summer Solstice reveals peak sunlight later this month,

Follow the moonlight toward the Monty of a Full Strawberry Moon
when it bears its fruit at the tail end of the June . . .

See you next time along the trails,

Bee Real

Bees remind us to bear witness to the
cross-pollination strength of a critical mass . . .

The fruits of our labor set us free when it
comes to spreading Love and Truth

A soul’s individual identity knows its personal authority
without sacrificing the group identity of the hive mentality . . .

Reverse engineering, technological advances, and trickle down communication
still lags behind the powerful humanity of our evolutionary potential . . .

Fixed ideas and burying our heads in the changing sands of time
serve as roadblocks to thinking outside the box thinking . . .

If only we pour our resources into holistic health care, teaching-based
disciplinary approaches and restorative justice,

and then relaxing market driven forces that
proliferate weaponizing technological advances . . .

Do you feel the stinging truth of this kind of stupidity?

In much the same way as the vibrational shift of Golden Age consciousness,
life should be sweet like honey!

May we allow our souls to shift the way we perceive the world,
so that we see the world transforms before our eyes . . .

Yeah, digesting bitter is a growing epidemic that spreads
along the fruited plains of our modern world . . .

Take in the experience of Tuesday’s fragrant Full Flower Moon and see the power
of picturing yourself like water gaining momentum gradually in our collective soulful tides . . .

Remember that people have the sovereign right to be who they are!
Quit taking their actions personally . . .

Building empathy is a clear energetic pathway into inner peace.

Chickadee Springs Forth Cheerful Songs of New Growth

Saturday’s Full Pink Moon symbolizes the early
arrival of flowers and vegetation during Spring

It has been said that the violence is waking us up . . .

Here we are making the transition from the death of Winter
into the birth of Spring . . .

Love overcomes fear of loss, abandonment, and attachments

During these times of purification, may we power our
April’s cleansing showers with a sunshine and rainbow mantra
of giving peace a chance on the inside and out!

Some say that the truth hurts.
And sometimes, hearing truth stinks like mulch . . .

But we can be gentle in how we speak our truths.
Let us become gentle on ourselves when we hear it from spirit!

Given all the talk about fake news out there today,
now is an opportune time to walk home with Chickadee

When their tweets speak to us, they are helping us connect
and rise up to hearing the singing voices of our Higher Selves

Mercury in Retrograde resurrects revisited experiences with old selves,
past lives, and relationships from yesteryear . . .

Yeah, old habits may die-hard.

But you don’t have to be salty or sugar coat truth
when speaking from a place of personal authority!

In that light, it can’t hurt to invest in loss by heeding the spiritual wisdom to
diminish our collective dietary intake of sugar and salt . . .

After all, we are what we eat, and our bodies are
portals to consciousness explored!

Till next time up the trails,

Guidance on Working our Boarders and Edges with Fox

The trickery of Fox trots into the trails,
while the wind blows in Mercury’s airs of Retrograde

A Full Pink Moon awakens early Spring Flowers,
as April Fool’s Day takes us out to the ballgame,
and sports our collective parks . . .

Light has crossed over the hump, and is more ready to take action
since the Spring Equinox already fades into the backdrop,
and the femininity of yin invests in loss . . .

The Bernie Sanders politician was an early arrival into
a new Aquarian Age kind of statesmanship
Back when flower power was merely a fringe movement . . .

But the will of the people are speaking up now more than ever!

The Bern’s a metaphor for progressive leaders becoming the new normal as
we shift forward into an increasingly multi-polar world –
where everyone is welcome, and we all have something to contribute!

Yet we have more positional predatory chickenhawks
than ever with Trump and company

Become inspired by our youth for standing up to the tyranny of
deep corporate proliferation of guns and nuclear weapons

Meditation on Fox is an energetic act of civil disobedience . . .

You can learn to cover your tracks, while walking invisibly among others
out in the open by becoming an agitator and distraction to established bullying behavior patterns

The liberty of the Stock Exchange and the Military-Industrial Complex
are destined to level, like turkey’s diminishing impact on squirrel’s stockpiles

But the same systems that oppress can liberate
Human beings have a strong survival instinct

We just have a lot of crap that we have to release
so that we can lick our wounds so they can heal

All of us can stand to work to soften our edges and expand our boarders
in ways that harmonize with our environment in the spirit of win-win politics

Our hybrid creature status can remember that
we are connected to all Earth’s creatures!

At the same time, our hybrid divine nature can
remember we are pre-wired for spirituality

Will “our friends in Congress” have a miraculous change in hearts and minds?
Will extraterrestrials beings help awaken a transformation
in our multidimensional awareness?

Times are changing . . .

Now more than ever, we need to welcome our powers of mutability for adaptability

Let the energy of Fox help you sniff out the
scent of discrimination and discernment in relationship
with cunning silent observation

See you up the trails,

Ari

Spiritual Swimming with Otter in the Week Ahead

Otter can facilitate a sweet sense of surrender,
and relax control issues between tension of energetic opposites . . .

A Full Worm Moon arrives on Thursday
Daylight Savings Time is coming soon down the pike

Spring Equinox is also arriving in the coming Pisces tides of March

Masculine and Feminine energies will dance together in equanimity . . .
Shouldn’t that be a good role model enacted by humanity?

Freeing our minds from our likes and dislikes helps heal our
natural human tendency to move away from what we
don’t want versus moving toward what we want more of

Just empathize for a moment that the gaining popularity of
the GLBTQ modern label is nothing new from the perspective of our
collective consciousness, sentient being history!

It’s just outside the box from a cookie cutter, Americancentric perspective

Consider meeting both opposite sides of the same coin with
an aware/soft mind, let it be, and let it go . . .

Cultivating sound mental health is a process of letting go of our
preferred/non-preferred experiences, yet responding to awareness instead of
reacting to our reality-based judgements

If only we meet our challenges with an aware opportunity of a soft mind,
a puncture-proof spirit of letting go, and be open to whatever
it is we are experiencing with love, and compassionate kindness . . .

But seasons don’t come and go in concrete steps in Nature
Her feminine power isn’t always cut and dry like that

The universal Law of Impermanence merely reflects Nature’s Way
that the only constant is change

An old meditative mantra of let it be and this too shall pass is good medicine
to remember always, but especially during energetic seasonal transitions

Otter, like Dolphins know how to be playful,
even when minding their daily business affairs

Our pleasures, aches, pains and injuries
will die just like we will someday . . .

May we all do the best that we can

Otters reflect relaxation as a balanced approach to work and play
Are you able to whistle while you work?

We suffer because we tend to forget living in harmony with the
changing seasons of life, which often results in fights . . .

But Otter reminds us it’s about how we flow with the fluid sensational waters of life

The gravitational pull of our world is heavy and serious enough . . .
But don’t let that take away your right to experience enjoyment

Goliath is a metaphor in our old testament consciousness that is
even more proliferated and pronounced in our world today

Just look at the NRA as part of the big business strangulation
of our sovereignty by the miserly ways of the Powers that Be

Mental illness is about doing the same thing over and over,
and expecting different results

But genuflection to the better devil you know mind-set is comforting,
even if toxic and against your own self-interest . . .

At the end of the day, nobody really benefits from a maximum economic
profit off of sickness, and death,
albeit under the guise of protection and security . . .

Is American ready to become an embodiment of showing a moral responsibility
to provide equal pay/livable wages, universal health care, and
a built-in emphasises on vacation/leisure/free choice time
to create your own self-determined experiences?

Or is that perspective only reserved for those that work hard within the
entitled, privileged inner circles of the minority of the opulent?

Till the next trailhead,

Ari
